The Keepers of the Law – Part 14

1Corinthians 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

2Corinthians 6:1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.

“in vain” 55 times in The Bible –  37 in OT – 18 in NT

Here are quite a few of them for illustration – but they ALL fit a basic pattern…

Leviticus 26:16 I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, (why??? It won’t go as planned…) for your enemies shall eat it.

Leviticus 26:20 And your strength shall be spent in vain (why??? It won’t go as planned…) for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits.

Jeremiah 46:11 Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines (why??? It won’t go as planned…); for thou shalt not be cured.

Psalms 127:1 A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it (why??? It doesn’t go as planned…): except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain (why??? It doesn’t go as planned…).

Proverbs 1:17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird (why??? You don’t catch the bird…).

Isaiah 30:7 For the Egyptians shall help in vain, (why??? won’t go as planned…) and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.

Isaiah 49:4 Then I said, I have laboured in vain (why??? It didn’t go as planned…), I have spent my strength for nought , and in vain (why??? It didn’t go as planned…) yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my work with my God.

Jeremiah 2:30 In vain have I smitten your children; (why??? It didn’t go as planned…) they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

Jeremiah 4:30 And when thou art spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; (why??? It won’t go as planned…) thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.

Zechariah 10:2 For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: (why??? It didn’t go as planned…) therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.

Matthew 15:9 But in vain they do worship me (why??? It doesn’t go as planned…), teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

1Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord (why??? It DOES go as planned…).

Galatians 4:11 I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.(why??? It didn’t go as planned…)

To do something “in vain” means that THE WORK DONE or THE ACT PERFORMED will not produce the desired results.

It will produce the OPPOSITE of the desired result.

Isaiah 65:23 They shall not labour in vain, (why not???) nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.

So, after all of that Bible EVIDENCE, here is the definition of “in vain”

What do acts/works produce? WORKS PRODUCE FRUIT!

ACTS/WORK DONE “IN VAIN”=THE ACT/WORK WILL NOT PRODUCE GOOD FRUIT!!

The Act/Work will instead produce EVIL FRUIT!

The definition even fits this…

Isaiah 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

FRUIT OF THE EARTH?

Mark 4:26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; 27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up (this would be the fruit!), he knoweth not how.

Mark 4:28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. 29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.

The FRUIT of the Earth is humanity. It is either GOOD FRUIT or EVIL FRUIT. No in-between. God is BINARY!!

Joel 3:11 Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD. 12 Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about. 13 Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great

Matthew 13:24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: 25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. 26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. 27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? 28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? 29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them (they must be similar in appearance, thus “grow together”). 30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Matthew 13:37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. 41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; 42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

James 5:7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

And thus the definition fits these…
