The Lord’s Work – Part 21
“Good things” are the things which give eternal life. The Holy Spirit. Spiritual Bread, spiritual water. Spiritual good fruit.
To bring forth good things is to SPEAK the words of eternal life. To preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.
That is the only way to know a good tree from an evil tree: by their fruits. Not by their works, deeds, actions, obedience, dedication, love, sincerity
By their WORDS. The words of eternal life by the gospel of Jesus Christ are the only “good things” that we can bring forth.
Carnal good works are just shadows and figures.
Words are what we are judged by.
Words are a man’s fruit.
Words are a man’s things.
Good words are good fruit.
Good things are good words.
Good things are good wisdom and knowledge.
Good things are the Holy Spirit.
Good things are the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Good things are the words of eternal life.
Good things (true good things) are the things that proceed from the Father and from the heavenly promised land.
WORDS are the fruit, not works.
If you want to know a man, whether true or a spy, you must prove him by his words. Don’t look at his works, but draw out his words.
There is a relationship between works and fruits: works bring forth fruits.
Titus 3:14 And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful.
Colossians 1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
Working is no the fruit. The fruit is the finished product of the working. A building. A house. A coat. A sword. Offspring.
Works are not fruits. Fruits are not works. Works bring forth fruits.
However, fruit can be called a “work” when it is finished. A FINISHED work can be called a fruit.
The wages of sin is death. Sin, when it is finished bringeth forth death. What does sin work? Sin works death. When sin works, death is the fruit. That is what sin brings forth.
Works are required to bring forth fruit. There was a time when no work was required. The Earth brought forth fruit of itself. The Lord did all the work to bring forth fruit. But now, the earth, just like mankind, is under a curse. Now, work is required to bring forth fruit.
Genesis 3:17,19 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; … 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
For the unsaved, sin is the work, death is the fruit.
For the saved man, righteousness is the work, eternal life is the fruit. But not our works of righteousness which we have done.
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
We are justified by works of righteousness. But they are not ones that we have done. Why? Because they are not works that we COULD do.
See, there are works in salvation. There is no fruit (eternal life) without works.
James 2:21-24 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. 24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
But they are not our works. Jesus did all the works. He brought forth eternal life for man by his hard labour. He fulfilled the law. He went to death (the prison house). He took our sins and cast them into the Hell. He broke His body open and gave meat and drink to the hungry prisoners in death. He clothed the naked prisoners. He conquered death. He broke the gates of the grave asunder. He freed its prisoners. Then, He ascended to Heaven and made the atonement in the true temple (not the figure). He went into the most holy place and put His own blood on the mercy seat. That is work!
And think about this, when He was about to do all this: He sweated!
Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
In the sweat of His face He brought forth life out of death. He did the work. He did the works of righteousness!
We are saved by works, but they are His works. He just GIVES us righteousness. He just GIVES us eternal life, by GRACE.
And the only work(s) that we have to do in order to be saved by His grace, is to believe and confess the words of God.
Its the same thing that Abraham did “when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar”. Believe God’s word and make an offering.
Deuteronomy 23:23 That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform; even a freewill offering, according as thou hast vowed unto the LORD thy God, which thou hast promised with thy mouth.
Hebrews 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
You make that same offering that Abraham made, after the same pattern, but in TRUTH, with your LIPS. That is exactly what a salvation prayer is: an offering, a sacrifice.
Not your words, but His words. But they have to be perfect, pure. You have to offer up His sacrifice, His son. Not your own.
The only work we have to do is believe and confess the words of God.
Work # 1: Believe
John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
To believe the word of God is a work.
And to speak the word of God is a work.
Work # 2: Confess
John 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
To speak the words is to work and the words brought forth is the fruit.
To receive, and hold, and speak the words of God, this is the works of God.
The first works, bringing forth the first good fruits. The man that does these things is a good tree.
Believe and Confess. Believe the gospel of Christ and Confess it out of your mouth.
The Bible calls these “the first works”.
Revelation 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
But…. Before you CAN believe, there is one thing you have to do.
People talk about the ABCs of Salvation:
That is REALLY messed up. Its deceitful. Its Satanic.
But here is the one I’ve heard more:
Accept. Believe. Confess. Its almost right. But isn’t that exactly what Satan tries to give man?
But we are never told to “accept the Lord Jesus as our personal saviour”. Instead, our job is to be acceptable, or accepted, of HIM.
Accept* is in the NT 28 times in 27 versus.
Ephesians 5:10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
It doesn’t matter what WE accept. It matters what THE LORD accepts.
We need to understand what is acceptable unto the Lord. We are not told to make sure we accept the Lord. We are told to be sure that we, and our works, are acceptable to the Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.
We need the Lord to accept us! We aren’t required to accept Him.
You say.. “ahh what’s the big deal?!” ABC, its easy to remember. Maybe its not 100% the right words, but it’s pretty close!
You think the “right words” aren’t a big deal to God?
Being exacting and perfect with the word of God is a HUGE deal.
You are saved by the confession of your mouth, the fruit of your lips. And if there is iniquity in it, will it be accepted? Will YOU be accepted?
Genesis 4:7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
Cain was not accepted.
1st instance of “accept*” in the Bible. If you don’t offer exactly what God requires, you won’t be ACCEPTED.
If you have the wrong WORDS coming out of your lips, you won’t be ACCEPTED.
You don’t DOEST well. You sacrifice was sincere and wholehearted, but it is become SIN.
Psalms 109:7 When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin.
Proverbs 21:27 The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he bringeth it with a wicked mind?
It doesn’t matter how clean his mind is. His motivation doesn’t matter. The sacrifice itself is sin.
Proverbs 15:8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.
Your prayer is your sacrifice!! That is the WORK that you must do to perfect (complete) your faith, after the pattern of Abraham.
